How Time-of-Use Plans Work
Time-of-use plans split the day into peak and off-peak periods. During the free hours, such as overnight, on weekends, or during set daytime windows, you pay nothing for energy. In exchange, the rate during the remaining hours is usually higher than on a standard flat-rate plan.
Your TDU delivery charges still apply to every kWh, including the free ones. The savings come only from the energy portion of your bill.

Who Benefits Most
- EV owners who charge overnight can move a large share of their kWh into free hours.
- Night-shift workers who are awake and using power when rates are lowest.
- Pool and hot tub owners who can run pumps and heaters during the free window.
- Families who can shift laundry and the dishwasher to off-peak hours.
- Work-from-home households that can take advantage of daytime free plans.
What to Watch For
Free hours are only a good deal when the whole bill comes out lower.
Higher Peak Rates
TOU plans offset free hours with higher rates during peak times. Check the rate at your actual usage level to make sure savings outweigh the premium.
How to compare plans >Bill Credit Thresholds
Some TOU plans include bill credits that only kick in above a certain usage level. If your usage is below the threshold, you may miss the credit entirely.
Understanding your EFL >Your Usage Pattern Matters
Free nights plans save the most when you shift heavy usage to nighttime. If most of your consumption is during peak hours, a flat-rate plan may cost less.
