About GridWise Audit
Restoring Transparency to the Texas Energy Market
GridWise was founded with a singular, consumer-first mission: to simplify the complex world of deregulated retail electricity in Texas. While the Power to Choose initiative intended to drive competitive savings for consumers, it also created a market with confusing price tiers, dense plan structures, and hidden costs. For the average Texan, selecting a plan isn't a straightforward comparison - it's an ongoing exercise in identifying administrative fees and minimum usage terms buried in the fine print.
Our platform operates entirely on data transparency. Unlike generic comparison widgets that simply sort plans by unrepresentative headline rates, the GridWise calculation engine actively scans the underlying Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs). We analyze actual mathematical usage curves to project a consumer's true out-of-pocket costs at distinct consumption intervals (500 kWh, 1,000 kWh, and 2,000 kWh). Furthermore, our platform includes consumer guardrails, automatically flagging terms like early termination fees or monthly service charges that add up over time.
True Math Calculations
We analyze full consumption profiles, not just static 1,000 kWh marketing shortcuts.
Consumer Guardrails
Automatic system flags highlight plans with monthly service fees above $10, along with early termination charges, so you can see the full cost picture.
We believe that an educated energy consumer is an empowered one. Beyond building interactive data models, we are dedicated to generating deep, regulatory-grounded research. Our team continuously publishes independent analyses covering state utility decisions, deregulation updates, and billing best practices. GridWise Audit is an electricity plan comparison platform built for Texas consumers, operated by WattTrim LLC, a registered Texas Electricity Broker (PUCT License No. BR260145). GridWise Audit earns revenue through optional subscription services and enrollment commissions when you choose to switch through our platform. Your analysis results are never influenced by provider compensation.
What We Do
Texas has a deregulated electricity market with over 100 licensed Retail Electric Providers (REPs) offering hundreds of plans at any given time. That competition should benefit consumers - but the sheer volume of options, combined with creative pricing structures, makes it nearly impossible to compare plans accurately without specialized tools.
GridWise Audit solves this by pulling plan data directly from official public sources, normalizing the pricing structures, and presenting every available option in a single, searchable, sortable interface. We show the rates as published in each plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) - the legally mandated disclosure document that every provider must file.
How We're Different
We include every REP licensed to operate in Texas - not a curated subset of partners.
Plan rankings are based purely on published rates and real usage data. Provider compensation never influences how plans are sorted or displayed.
We flag minimum usage charges, high cancellation fees, time-of-use pricing, and other gotchas that make plans look cheaper than they are.
Plan availability and pricing change frequently. Our data refreshes daily to reflect the current market.
Our Coverage
GridWise Audit covers all six Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) service territories in the deregulated areas of Texas:
- •Centerpoint Energy - Greater Houston area
- •Oncor Electric - Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex
- •AEP Texas Central - Corpus Christi, McAllen, Laredo
- •AEP Texas North - Abilene, West Texas
- •Texas-New Mexico Power - Parts of DFW suburbs
- •Lubbock Power & Light - Lubbock area
These six TDUs serve the deregulated portions of the Texas electricity market. Areas served by municipal utilities or electric cooperatives operate under different regulations and are not included in our comparison tool.
Market Data & Trends
Beyond plan comparison, GridWise Audit tracks retail electricity rates across all six TDU areas daily and maintains historical wholesale pricing data from ERCOT (the Electric Reliability Council of Texas). This data powers our Rate Trends charts, giving consumers visibility into how electricity prices move over time - information that was previously accessible only to industry insiders.
Revenue Model
GridWise Audit is a free comparison tool. Revenue comes from optional subscription services and enrollment commissions when customers choose to switch through our platform. We do not accept sponsored placements in plan rankings, and provider compensation has no influence on how plans are sorted, filtered, or displayed.
